Considering a Website Builder?

Here I have compiled a list of things to consider with Custom Web Design by Nanaimo PC Repairs & Web Design versus an Automated Web Site Builder.
Please Read Carefully.

We've all heard the ads on TV & radio promising a free, professional, “Fast & Easy” website design. Companies like 1-and-1, Intuit, Google, GoDaddy, WIX etc...
Basically any company that offers an Automated WEBSITE BUILDER.

Sure sound's convincing, right?
Is it To Good To Be True? (Of Course It Is)
“Fast, free & easy” is tempting so we owe it to ourselves to investigate a bit further.

Here is what is typically offered when choosing one of these companies.

1. Inexpensive. Low or no cost to set up.
2. Quick to set up (or so they tell you)
3. No need to know how to code.
4. You don’t need any special technical knowledge.
5. Choose from pre-made templates, no design skills needed

Let’s go through a few of the things they don’t tell you in the ads – the stuff they put in the "fine print".

Free isn’t NEVER free. You will often have a free introductory period, after which you’ll have to pay a monthly subscription fee to keep your site up & running.

Basic package's are usually just a few pages & features. It’s a teaser designed to get you to buy. The features advertised such as design templates & SEO are normally for premium customers. In order to access these features you’ll need a paid subscription.

Very few options for design & branding – design customizations to make your site match your brand are either not possible or can only be accessed by preminum users.

You don’t own your site. If & when you cancel the service or want to change hosting, you lose everything. You then have to start over from the beggining.

You usually can’t use your own domain. In most cases you’re required to use a subdomain ( When you can actually use a personalized domain, more often than not the service registers it – and therefore they own it.

Your theme is definitely not unique. Hundreds of other people will be using the same site templates that you are. There are 26,756,521 Wix sites out there as of this writing. How many themes could they possibly have? In Truth, there are only a few hundred or so to go around.

Not SEO optimized (Search Engine Optimization). Optimization cannot be done by a site builder. It’s just not a possiblity. If you want to have your site SEO'd you need to pay a premium.

Lack of support options. Will you be able to talk to a live person when you need help? Check it out before you sign up. If not move on. It's very important to be able to have interaction with site support.

Limited bandwidth and storage. These sites aren’t built to accommodate a lot of content or high traffic. If you need more than a very small site, you won’t have enough resources to keep it running.

Usually ad-supported or driven. Like many other free software options, ads drive the revenue. Expect to see ads in the back end of the site, and sometimes even on the front end. Not a very professional look for one’s business.

No white label option – this means that they place their company name and links on your site - usually somewhere in the footer.

Many site builders use Flash, which is not readable on devices like iPads and iPhones & being is phased out of web design.
